Michelle Obama: “Reading and writing has become a safe haven for me. This is why I want to pursue a creative writing degree - it has been the most fulfilling thing I’ve chosen to do in life thus far.” —Claudia Owusu, of Columbus, Ohio. Claudia’s story begins in Ghana, West Africa where her mother left her at the age of 5. Reading and writing have become a creative outlet for Claudia and one of the things that have helped her #ReachHigher. Claudia joined the First Lady for the Beating The Odds summit where she had the chance to meet students from across the country who have also faced many hardships throughout their life. These students will always have each other to turn to for support as they step on to campuses across the country this fall.

Michelle Obama: “The reason I want to #ReachHigher is so that later on in life I will be able to reach down and encourage others to reach higher and help people see that the sky isn't the limit.” —Devon Fredrick from Chicago, Illinois. Early on Devon thought the ultimate goal was to graduate high school, that was the top. One day he realized that he didn't want to be sitting on his parents porch at 21 years old like the other kids in the neighborhood, he needed to aim higher. Devon came to the @WhiteHouse for the First Lady's Beating The Odds summit, where he got to share his story on how he overcame obstacles to graduate high school and continue on to college.
